When thoughts are believed, they persist. When thoughts are experienced, they dissipate.
This is one of the most useful distinctions I’ve ever encountered. The difference between being trapped by a thought and simply witnessing it passing through.
Touch into your birthright to notice and be aware. We don’t need to create optimal circumstances to experience flow. It simply exists once we notice what’s in the way.
What We’re Learning
I’ve been hanging out with a group of forward-thinking entrepreneurs in a weekly well-being mastermind. This group has been a beautiful place for accountability as I move into deeper levels of true emotional honesty.
We’re talking about things that may seem non-important at surface level. Things like: noticing what you’re feeling, making space for it, dissolving beliefs to make way for actual experience, enjoying confusion, receiving clarity.
These conversations have shown me something important. Present moment awareness isn’t a destination you arrive at. It’s a practice you return to. Again and again. Every time you notice you’ve drifted.
Direct Experience Over Interpretation
Present moment awareness starts with direct experience and deep emotional honesty about what’s actually happening inside of us.
We’re never actually suffering that which we’re noticing. What we suffer is what we’re not noticing: our interpretation.
Think about that. The raw experience of this moment is usually neutral. Maybe there’s tension in your shoulders. Maybe your mind is busy. But the suffering comes from the story. “This shouldn’t be happening.” “Something is wrong.” “I need to fix this.”
The interpretation adds a layer on top of reality that makes everything harder than it needs to be.
The Practice of Noticing
What if you could just notice without immediately trying to change or fix or understand?
This is harder than it sounds. We’re trained to analyze. To solve. To improve. But sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply witness what’s here without adding anything to it.
A feeling rises. You notice it. It passes. That’s the whole practice.
The mind wants it to be more complicated than that. The mind loves complexity because complexity keeps it employed. But awareness is simple. It’s the believing that complicates everything.
The Question Worth Sitting With
Is it possible that your present-time experiences are not actually what prevent you from having well-being in your life, right now?
Can you experience your thinking without believing it?
When we stop resisting our resistance and begin experiencing life without the filters of belief, we find our truth. And well-being lives in that space we create.
Scary. Vulnerable. Powerful. Visionary. Fun.
The now is always available. You don’t have to earn access to it. You just have to stop believing the thoughts that say you’re somewhere else.
