People ask me all the time: how do I find my purpose? My response is always the same. When is the last time you were of service to someone?
If you don’t know how to find alignment, the best way to find it is through service to others. When you serve, there’s a kind of alignment that comes from it because it feels good to do something for someone and have it be well received.
When I had a landscaping business, I would find the most ragged looking lawn in the neighborhood. I knew it belonged to someone who couldn’t afford to have it mowed. I would knock on their door and offer to mow it for free. Sometimes it brought tears to their eyes.
That was how, when I didn’t know what I was doing, I could still be of service to others. And reality honored that by consistently upgrading me with deeper levels of service.
Elevated Through Service
I don’t have an Ivy League education. I don’t even have a college degree. Yet I was leading a team of 120 people who did have Ivy League degrees at Google.
I truly believe I was elevated into that position because I was always humble enough to show up in service to others without expectation. To be a vessel that the energy of service could flow through.
There’s an upgraded breadcrumb path that manifests when you show up that way without thought of how it will ripple out as outcome.
This is where purpose reveals itself.
Explore the spiritual teachings for understanding how service creates alignment.
Levels of Service
Don’t try to make a difference when you’re down in the well. When you’re struggling, be present with what’s there and where you can show up in this moment. Service to others ripples out in levels.
The first level is to yourself. Find alignment with yourself. The second level is close friends and family. Then your greater local community. Then your state. Then your nation. Then the globe. Then cosmic consciousness.
But you have to learn how to serve yourself before you can effectively serve anyone else. That’s the story of when the cup overfloweth. Then you have something to actually give.
Life as Acupuncturist
Everything is happening because life is triggering the energy that’s ready to move within you. Life is an acupuncture needle. That needle pokes you where you have energy that needs movement.
Nothing is ever going wrong even though it sometimes feels that way. That feeling of something going wrong shows reality is poking you in the nervous system. Your only job is to feel the discomfort and allow it to exist in your system for a temporary season. On the other side of that temporary season is when the solution comes in.
If you’re in a state of depression and completely disconnected from your body, start showing up somewhere you can be of service to others. Volunteer somewhere. Mow somebody’s lawn. Prosperity is just understanding what somebody needs and helping them get it.
