Discernment in decision making is seeing clearly. Not what you want to see or what you fear. What’s actually happening.
Most people confuse discernment with intuition. They’re related but different. Intuition is a feeling. Discernment is the ability to evaluate whether that feeling is trustworthy.
Intuition vs Discernment
Intuition says something is off. Discernment asks: is this real information or is this my trauma pattern firing?
Not every gut feeling is accurate. Some are wisdom. Some are old wounds mistaking safety for danger or danger for safety.
Discernment in decision making is the layer that evaluates intuition. It asks: what’s actually true here, independent of my emotional reaction?
I’ve made terrible decisions following gut feelings that turned out to be fear in disguise. I’ve also ignored gut feelings that were trying to save me. The difference between wisdom and foolishness isn’t having intuition. It’s having discernment about which intuitions to trust.
Developing the Skill
Discernment develops through honest feedback loops. You make a call, you see what happens, you adjust.
The problem is most people never complete the loop. They make intuitive calls but never check if they were right. So intuition stays uncalibrated.
Track your hunches. Write them down. See how often you’re right. That’s how intuition gets refined into discernment.
Over time, you start noticing patterns. You learn which feelings tend to be accurate and which tend to be projections. You develop a personal map of your own reliability.
The Stillness Requirement
Discernment in decision making requires stillness. When you’re reactive, you can’t see clearly. The emotional charge distorts everything.
Before making a decision, get still. Let the charge settle. Then look again. What you see from stillness is usually closer to truth than what you see from activation.
This is why big decisions shouldn’t be made in emotional states. Sleep on it isn’t just folk wisdom. It’s creating space for discernment to come online.

The Body’s Role
Real discernment isn’t purely mental. It includes the body’s information.
When something is off, you often feel it physically before you think it. A tightness in the chest. A queasy stomach. A sense of contraction.
Discernment means learning to read these signals accurately. Not every contraction means no. Sometimes it’s just fear of the unknown. But sometimes it’s genuine warning.
The skill is in distinguishing between the two. And that only comes through practice and honest self-observation.

Without it, you’re at the mercy of every emotional wave. Some will steer you right. Some won’t. And you can’t tell the difference.
