Books That Changed My Life: 20 Years of Spiritual Rabbit Holes

The books that changed my life didn't just give me information—they gave me new operating systems. These are the ones that rewired me.

From the Vault

I wrote this 7 years, 5 months ago. My thinking has probably evolved—some ideas deepened, others abandoned, a few transformed entirely. For how I'm currently thinking about things, check out what I'm working on today or Jesus Lightning.

Found this through Google? You just proved a point I've made often. This post is still working years later—no ad spend, no algorithm games. SEO is the highest-ROI investment any creator can make. I can help you build that.

Listen while you workout, cook, or commute.

These are the books that rewired my operating system over 20 years of spiritual exploration. Not books I thought were interesting—books that fundamentally changed how I see reality.

This list started 7+ years ago but I’ve done my best to add new gems as I find them.

Some are dense. Some are channeled. Some sound crazy until they click.

The Foundations

These established the base layer of my understanding.

Think and Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill
The original manifestation book before anyone called it that. Hill’s interviews with successful people revealed principles that every LOA teacher has built upon since.
Autobiography of a Yogi

Paramahansa Yogananda
Steve Jobs had this as the only book on his iPad and gave copies at his funeral. It opened my eyes to what’s possible when you take spiritual development seriously.
Psycho-Cybernetics

Maxwell Maltz
A plastic surgeon noticed patients’ self-image didn’t change after surgery. His exploration of why became the foundation for all modern visualization and self-image work.
Illusions

Richard Bach
A short novel about a reluctant messiah who teaches through demonstration. Bach makes the impossible feel inevitable. I’ve read it probably 20 times.
I Am That

Nisargadatta Maharaj
Dialogues with an Indian sage that cut through everything I thought I knew. Pure non-dual teaching. Dense but transformative if you sit with it.

The Seth Material

Jane Roberts channeled an entity called Seth from 1963-1984. These books fundamentally changed how I understand reality creation.

The Nature of Personal Reality

Jane Roberts (Seth)
“You create your own reality” explained in exhaustive detail. Dense, challenging, and the most important book on this list for understanding how beliefs become experience.
The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events

Jane Roberts (Seth)
How individual consciousness interacts with collective reality. Explains why you’re never truly a victim of circumstances—you’re always a co-creator at some level.

Abraham-Hicks & The Emotional Scale

Ask and It Is Given

Esther & Jerry Hicks
The emotional guidance scale changed everything for me. Simple framework: move up the scale one emotion at a time. Anger is better than depression. Hope is better than anger.

Neville Goddard

The mystic who influenced everyone from Joseph Murphy to Wayne Dyer. His teachings on imagination as the creative power are the foundation of my current practice.

The Neville Goddard Complete Reader

Neville Goddard
All his major works in one volume. Start here and you’ll understand why his ideas keep showing up in every modern manifestation teaching.
Let Us Go Into the Silence

Neville Goddard
His later mystical lectures on the Bible as psychological drama. This is where Neville gets deep into Scripture as a map of consciousness rather than history.

Reality as Simulation

These books explore consciousness as the fundamental substrate of reality.

My Big TOE

Thomas Campbell
A physicist’s model of reality as a consciousness-based simulation. Dense and technical but provides a framework that explains paranormal phenomena, manifestation, and physics in one unified theory.
Reality Transurfing

Vadim Zeland
A Russian quantum physicist’s guide to navigating the space of variations. Introduces “pendulums” (collective thought structures that feed on your energy) and how to avoid them.

Sacred Geometry & Ancient Wisdom

The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life, Vol. 1

Drunvalo Melchizedek
Sacred geometry, merkaba meditation, and the hidden history of consciousness. Wild claims that somehow make sense when you see the patterns.
The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life, Vol. 2

Drunvalo Melchizedek
Continues the journey deeper into the merkaba and dimensional awareness. Read after Volume 1.

Channeled Material

Take what resonates. Some of this is dense and requires patience.

The Padgett Messages Vol. 1

James Padgett
Dense spiritual cosmology channeled by a Washington D.C. lawyer in the early 1900s. Challenging but contains a coherent metaphysical system worth exploring.
The Padgett Messages Vol. 2

James Padgett
Continues the revelations from the first volume. Read after Volume 1.
The Kryon Book Series

Lee Carroll
Channeled material focused on the shift in human consciousness. Start with Book One and see if it resonates. Some find it transformative; others bounce off it.
Quest for Truth

Bashar (Darryl Anka)
Bashar’s core teachings on following your highest excitement, parallel realities, and the mechanics of manifestation. Practical and immediately applicable.
Creating Money

Sanaya Roman & Duane Packer
Channeled guide to abundance from the entity Orin. Practical exercises for shifting your relationship with money. Less woo than it sounds.
The Paul Selig Series

Paul Selig
These channeled books work on you as you read them. The language itself seems to activate something. Strange but powerful. Start with “I Am the Word.”
A Course in Miracles

Foundation for Inner Peace
365-day spiritual curriculum channeled through Helen Schucman. Challenging, Christian-flavored non-duality. Either it clicks for you or it doesn’t—but when it clicks, it transforms.

Past Lives & The Afterlife

Journey of Souls

Michael Newton
A hypnotherapist’s compilation of what patients reported under deep trance about the afterlife. Remarkably consistent accounts of soul groups, life planning, and the between-lives state.
Destiny of Souls

Michael Newton
The sequel goes deeper into soul development, specialized roles, and the structure of the spirit world. Read after Journey of Souls.

The Body & Emotions

The Emotion Code

Bradley Nelson
How trapped emotions create physical and psychological problems, and a simple method for releasing them. Sounds too simple to work—then you try it.
Tuning the Human Biofield

Eileen Day McKusick
Sound healing meets energy work. McKusick maps the biofield with tuning forks and discovers predictable patterns of stored trauma. Practical and backed by her research.
The Complete Dictionary of Ailments and Diseases

Jacques Martel
Every physical symptom has an emotional/metaphysical component. This dictionary maps the connection between specific ailments and the emotional patterns that create them.
Healing Trauma

Peter A. Levine
A pioneering program for restoring the wisdom of your body. Levine explains how trauma gets stuck in the nervous system and provides practical exercises to release it.
This Is How

Augusten Burroughs
Brutally honest advice on surviving life’s hardest moments. No spiritual bypassing here—just raw, practical guidance from someone who’s been through it all.

Sadhguru

Mystic's Musings

Sadhguru
Sadhguru’s early teachings before he became mainstream. Raw, unpolished, and more esoteric than his later work. Hard to find but worth tracking down.
Inner Engineering

Sadhguru
A more accessible entry point into yogic technology. Practical tools for taking charge of your inner experience rather than being victim to external circumstances.

Quantum Prayer

The Isaiah Effect

Gregg Braden
How ancient prayer techniques match modern quantum physics. Braden bridges the gap between science and spirituality in a way that makes both more accessible.

Creativity & Resistance

The Artist's Way

Julia Cameron
12-week course in creative recovery. Morning pages and artist dates sound simple but they unlock something. Essential if creative blocks are holding you back.
The War of Art

Steven Pressfield
Names the enemy: Resistance. Short, punchy chapters that hit like a slap. Read this when you’re avoiding the work you know you’re meant to do.

Recovery & Emotional Sobriety

Everyone—regardless of substance history—should read and work the 12 steps if emotional sobriety is the goal.

Alcoholics Anonymous (The Big Book)

AA World Services
Not just for alcoholics. The 12 steps are a technology for processing resentment, fear, and self-deception. This book changed my relationship with my own emotional patterns.
How Al-Anon Works

Al-Anon Family Groups
Learn to set boundaries. Even if you don’t have an alcoholic in your life, the principles here teach you to stop managing other people’s emotions and start managing your own.

Fiction That Made Me Feel

Not spiritual books, but books that cracked me open emotionally. Sometimes fiction does what non-fiction can’t.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Stephen Chbosky
A coming-of-age novel told through letters that somehow captures what it feels like to be alive and confused and trying to figure out how to participate in life. Read it as a teenager, still hits different as an adult.

Where I Am Now

After 20 years of these rabbit holes, I’ve distilled what works into a mystical interpretation of the Bible. The Jesus Lightning series is my attempt to synthesize everything on this list into a coherent framework.

Not replacing any of these teachers—building on them. Showing how the same truths appear across traditions when you know how to look.

Jesus Lightning - White
Jesus Lightning - Yellow
Jesus Lightning - Orange
Jesus Lightning - Red
Jesus Lightning - Pink
Jesus Lightning - Teal
Jesus Lightning - Dark Blue

This is the lens the Bible is meant to be read through.

Explore the Jesus Lightning book series for mystical Bible interpretation that reveals the inner meaning of Scripture.
