The Power of Intention: Why Words Matter Less Than You Think

The power of intention is what makes words work. It's not the words themselves but the meaning and energy you hold while using them.

From the Vault

I wrote this 13 years, 2 months ago. My thinking has probably evolved—some ideas deepened, others abandoned, a few transformed entirely. For how I'm currently thinking about things, check out what I'm working on today or Bible Mystic.

Found this through Google? You just proved a point I've made often. This post is still working years later—no ad spend, no algorithm games. SEO is the highest-ROI investment any creator can make. I can help you build that.

Listen while you workout, cook, or commute.

Words can be incredibly powerful. Words can influence, dissuade, condemn, congratulate. But more important than words is their structure, which points to the underlying meaning behind a word or set of words.

This is called semantics.

It’s the semantics of words that make them so powerful. Semantics point to the energetic intent that lies within the words. Semantics are the meaning found hidden between the lines.

When we use a set of words, our hope isn’t that the words are heard, but that their meaning is understood. This is the power of intention at work.

Meaning Is Personal

In each culture, certain words are assigned with certain meaning. This makes it easier to convey complex ideas with a simple structure of words.

But ultimately, deciding the meaning of every single word is a personal choice. Your meaning for a word is the result of your life experience, no one else’s.

Hold a word in your mind. Say it out loud. Listen to it reverberate around an empty room. What does it mean to you?

Is it a word that holds such profound meaning in your personal experience that just saying it brings in a flood of emotions and energy?

Use these words often. Focus upon them. Become these words. Let them shape how you move through the world.

The Gap Between Speaking and Understanding

Communication fails more often than it succeeds. Two people can use the exact same words and mean completely different things. The word “love” means something different to everyone who says it.

This is why actions speak louder than words. Actions bypass the translation problem. When someone shows you who they are, there’s less room for misinterpretation.

The power of intention lives in the gap between what’s said and what’s meant. Master that gap and you master communication.

The Energy of Words

In religion and spirituality, words have a massive amount of energy. Some words hold the beliefs of millions of people over thousands of years. When some use these words, they feel they can change the world for the better.

Think about words like “love,” “God,” “freedom.” These aren’t just sounds. They’re containers for centuries of human experience. When you use them, you’re tapping into a reservoir.

It’s important to remember that what you’re feeling isn’t the word, but rather the meaning and intent you hold when focusing on the word.

The power of intention is far greater than any word will ever become. Meaning and intent are what actually create change. Words are just the vehicle. The intention is the fuel.

This is the lens the Bible is meant to be read through.
