Money Affirmations: Why They Didn’t Work Until I Changed This

Money affirmations don't work when your actions contradict them. Here's how to align your spending with your words so abundance can actually flow.

From the Vault

I wrote this 5 years, 10 months ago. My thinking has probably evolved—some ideas deepened, others abandoned, a few transformed entirely. For how I'm currently thinking about things, check out what I'm working on today or Bible Mystic.

Found this through Google? You just proved a point I've made often. This post is still working years later—no ad spend, no algorithm games. SEO is the highest-ROI investment any creator can make. I can help you build that.

Listen while you workout, cook, or commute.

Money affirmations didn’t work for me until I changed my relationship with spending.

For much of my life, I was out of integrity with money. I didn’t have much of it, so when I got it I thought I had to hoard it. And when I spent it, I was constantly beating myself up for wasting it.

The affirmations couldn’t land because my actions contradicted them.

Money Is Energy

One of the things I’ve learned as I’ve become more in tune with the nature of money is that money is an energy. If you harness the energy of it in the right way, it will serve you.

Money likes to flow. It doesn’t like to be gripped tightly. It doesn’t like to be hoarded out of fear. It wants to move through you, not stop with you.

The best money affirmations acknowledge this: “Money flows to me and through me.” “I am a channel for abundance.” “I release and receive freely.”

But here is what most people miss: saying these words while clutching every dollar creates a contradiction your subconscious can’t ignore. The words say flow. The behavior says scarcity. Your deeper mind believes the behavior.

Spending as Practice

Here’s what changed everything: I started treating spending as a spiritual practice.

When I spend money intentionally, on things that align with my values, that serve my growth, that bring genuine joy, I’m participating in the flow. I’m saying yes to circulation.

When I spend money unconsciously, to numb, to impress, to fill a void, I’m resisting the flow. That’s when regret shows up.

The practice isn’t about spending less or more. It’s about spending consciously.

Every purchase becomes a moment of inquiry. Am I buying this from expansion or contraction? From vision or from fear? From alignment or from avoidance?

The Guilt Pattern

Many people sabotage money affirmations with guilt. They feel guilty receiving. They feel guilty spending. They feel guilty wanting more.

This guilt usually comes from childhood. Messages about money being dirty or dangerous. Beliefs that wanting abundance makes you greedy or shallow.

Money affirmations can’t override deep guilt. You have to process the guilt first. Feel it. Understand where it came from. Release it consciously. Then the affirmations have space to land.

Receiving as Practice

The other side of the equation is receiving. Many people who struggle with money affirmations are actually poor receivers. They deflect compliments. They refuse help. They feel uncomfortable when good things come easily.

If you can’t receive a compliment gracefully, you will struggle to receive money gracefully. It’s the same muscle.

Practice receiving small things fully. A kind word. A gift. An offer of help. Say thank you and mean it. Let it in. This trains you for larger receiving.

The Affirmation That Works

Money affirmations work when they’re paired with aligned action. Say “money flows to me easily” while hoarding every dollar, and nothing shifts. Say it while spending with intention and receiving with gratitude, and watch what opens up.

The affirmation I use most: “I spend with intention and receive with gratitude. Money loves to work with me because I keep it moving.”

That’s not magic. That’s alignment. And alignment is where the real magic happens.

This is the lens the Bible is meant to be read through.
