It’s easy to feel behind in the AI race even when you’re way ahead. Every day, I still meet people who’ve never heard of ChatGPT, and then I scroll Twitter and see someone’s AI agent making $100K in a day. Suddenly I’m questioning everything.
But I’m not actually behind. I’ve been building with Claude Code since March. I’m fully augmented – there’s never a moment I’m not building something. I’ve got Claude Code piped into a Telegram app that turns my random thoughts into blog posts, books, and apps. That’s literally how I’m writing this article right now.
I’m building two to three websites a day for clients who think websites cost $5,000 and still take a month or more to turnaround. I operate at superhuman speeds, I’ve never been more efficient and effective, and yet I still feel behind. I still get that gut-punch FOMO when I scroll AI Twitter.
Sound familiar? Well, it turns out that feeling isn’t what you think it is.
That FOMO Feeling? It’s Actually a Message
Before I became an AI-augmented building machine, I was a certified emotional processing coach. My job was helping people figure out why they felt anxious or numb or felt they were losing their minds.
What I learned: Those uncomfortable feelings we all have aren’t random noise. They’re not signs you’re failing. They’re encrypted messages from your unconscious mind trying to tell you something important.
Think of it this way: have you ever been in another country and your phone buzzes? You get a text in a language you don’t speak. The message is real and important, but you need Google Translate first. That’s what shadow work is. It’s learning to translate the encrypted messages your emotions are constantly sending you.
Your unconscious mind has tons of energy stored up. Creative energy, brilliant ideas, intuitive hits. But when that energy gets stuck or ignored, it comes out sideways. Sometimes as inspired urges (suddenly wanting to build something cool). Sometimes as destructive behavior (doom-scrolling Twitter for six hours straight).
It’s why emergency rooms get crazy during full moons. Your body is basically a collection of electrical antennas picking up signals all the time. And the more you’re unconscious to what’s happening in your body, the more you act out that energy without knowing it. The question is: are you learning to decode those signals, or are you just reacting to them?
Why Your Nervous System Is Freaking Out
When you see someone building something amazing with AI, your nervous system goes into full panic mode. It’s your internal alarm system screaming: “DANGER! OPPORTUNITY ESCAPING! DO SOMETHING NOW!”
Most people react to this alarm by jumping from tool to tool, trend to trend. They become AI tool collectors instead of AI tool users. They test every new model, join every Discord, follow every tutorial. Jack of all trades, master of none.
The problem: when your nervous system is weak and atrophied (a muscle you never use), you can’t handle the intensity of that FOMO energy. So instead of sitting with it and learning from it, you just react to it.
It’s being afraid of fire so you run around putting out matches while your house burns down.
What Happens When You Decode the Message
What if you did the opposite? What if instead of reacting to that FOMO feeling, you got really still and listened to what it’s actually trying to tell you?
Next time you feel that gut-punch FOMO scrolling Twitter, don’t immediately open 15 new tabs. Instead, close Twitter. Sit somewhere quiet. Take three deep breaths.
Now feel that energy in your body. Don’t try to fix it or change it. Just notice it. Where do you feel it? Your chest? Your stomach? Your throat?
Stay with that feeling like you’re watching a thunderstorm from inside your house. Let it be as big and intense as it wants to be. Don’t make it mean anything about you. Don’t make it mean you’re behind or failing or missing out.
Just watch it. Feel it fully. This is what I call the “bull ride” – staying present with intense energy without being thrown off.
What happens next feels magical. That chaotic FOMO energy starts to transform back into what it actually is: pure creative potential. Raw inspiration. A compass pointing you toward what you’re actually supposed to build.
The Truth Most People Miss
On the other side of that bull ride, something becomes crystal clear: you realize exactly where your focus belongs. Not on every shiny new tool. Not on copying what everyone else is building. But on the one thing only you can build.
This matters now more than ever: Very soon (like, today), everyone will be able to build any technical thing you think only you can build today with your early adopter skills. The power of these tools is going exponential. Soon, building an app will be easier than making a PowerPoint presentation.
So chasing technical skills isn’t the play anymore. The play is tapping into your unique creative brilliance and perspective; your lived experience. And that kind of reflection only happens in silence, in stillness, in those moments when you’re not consuming everyone else’s ideas.
Think of AI Twitter like a lightning storm. You need to watch it to understand its power, but you don’t stand outside in the rain holding a metal rod. You observe from a safe distance, learn what you need to learn, then retreat to process what it all means.
Your job isn’t to stay perpetually electrified with your nervous system on high alert. Your job is to feel those big feelings, decode their message, and then build the thing only you could build.
Why This Is The Only Skill That Will Matter
This coming year will be the year everyone can build anything. When AI agents can code, design, write, and launch products while you sleep, the question won’t be “how do I build it?” The question will be “why should I build it?”
And “why” can only be answered in silence. In stillness. In those quiet moments when you’re not consuming content but creating space for your own ideas to emerge.
That’s what shadow work teaches you: how to be comfortable with temporary discomfort. How to sit with intense energy without immediately reacting to it. How to decode the encrypted messages your emotions are sending you.
When everyone can technically build anything, your discernment becomes your superpower. Your ability to feel what’s actually meant for you versus what’s just shiny and new. Your capacity to move through FOMO instead of being paralyzed by it.
So the next time you feel that familiar pang scrolling AI Twitter, remember: that’s not weakness. That’s not you being behind. That’s encrypted data meant only for you.
Feel it fully. Decode the message. Then go build something only you could build.
This is shadow work in action.
