Actions Speak Louder Than Words Meaning: What My Uncle Taught Me About Energy

Actions speak louder than words meaning becomes clear when you observe someone who picks up on energy, not language. Words can lie. Energy never does.

From the Vault

I wrote this 13 years, 3 months ago. My thinking has probably evolved—some ideas deepened, others abandoned, a few transformed entirely. For how I'm currently thinking about things, check out what I'm working on today or Bible Mystic.

Found this through Google? You just proved a point I've made often. This post is still working years later—no ad spend, no algorithm games. SEO is the highest-ROI investment any creator can make. I can help you build that.

Listen while you workout, cook, or commute.

Actions speak louder than words meaning becomes crystal clear when you spend time with someone who picks up on energy more than language.

I’m spending time with my mentally-challenged uncle, Matt. He is 50-plus years old and lives for opposites, daylight savings time, and informing you of when the Dallas Cowboys are playing.

At the ranch he lives at year-round, he is in charge of changing the clocks an hour forward or backward during the spring and fall time changes. This is a job he takes very seriously, even when his ranchmates tease him occasionally calling him clock-breaker.

A Shift in Perspective

In years past, I’ve been indifferent to Matt, or worse, downright annoyed. Not that I don’t love when he’s doing long-division out loud while waving his hand high in the air each time he needs to carry a number. Or the times he walks up to you in the middle of a conversation, cookbook in hand, and asks questions like: Which is thicker, lemon-meringue pie or chocolate-chiffon pie?

In the past, without diverting my attention, I would just casually respond and hope he would go off in the other room and leave me alone.

This time is different. Going through a shift in consciousness has been a game changer. I’m thinking about things differently now.

I’m not just brushing Matt aside so I can focus on my own stuff. I’ve been studying him closely. I’m fascinated with what he has shown me about the law of attraction, new energy, and this shift in consciousness we are all going through.

An Energetic Mirror

What I’ve discovered is that Matt is almost like an energetic mirror. Whatever the dominant mood of the room is becomes the mood he most closely exhibits in his behavior.

At his core, he’s a fun-loving, kind individual. But I get the feeling he picks up on the energy around him much more than most people do. He thinks conceptually, but is constantly trying to adapt to the linear world around him by developing structure through opposites, time, dates.

Conceptually, he’s a sponge of the energy around him. I’ve watched his mood fluctuate and swing rapidly in opposite directions strictly based on how stressed out the people around him are.

Conceptual Versus Linear Thinking

Much of my time has been spent reading about children diagnosed with ADD and autism. My understanding is not that they are stupid or mentally-challenged. Rather, they just think differently than those of us that rely on linear concepts to provide structure.

What we see with autistic children is that when they are able to make their own decisions and given the freedom to live their life within a reasonable set of non-boundaries, they thrive. This is how conceptual thinking works.

These children do not think in the fashion our schools have told us is right. To autistic children, 1 + 1 = 2 is irrelevant. They could care less. What they want to know is the solution, and then they’ll decide how that solution came to be.

They don’t need to always understand why a solution is the way it is, because they intuitively understand that our concept of solution is only based on limited knowledge. For them, they are picking up on the energy of things, not the words or the solutions. Solutions are personal, never universal.

Words Versus Energy

When I observe Matt, this becomes more clear than ever. When given real freedom to take a walk, make a snack, or do his laundry, he gets along just fine. He might use a little too much soap, fill his ice-cup a little too full, or wander into someone’s yard a couple of times. But he’s exploring, the way we should all experiment with life.

On the opposite side: when he is specifically told to do something or not do something, especially when he is not given the opportunity to decide for himself, he resists. Matt does not like any demand that comes from a place of scarcity or insecurity.

Talking to Matt is similar to talking to a dog. They do not necessarily understand your words, but pick up infinitely more on the energy behind your words.

When a command is presented by a person that deep down does not believe the command will be followed, the energy says: I don’t really think you’re capable of following this. And therefore the command is not obeyed.

The Problem With Incongruent Communication

This is the problem with the way many people communicate and live their lives. Their words and their energy are not congruent. So they say all the right things, read all the right books, post all the right affirmations, and yet their life becomes more stressful as the years go by.

Then they say: Well, this Law of Attraction thing isn’t working out the way it’s supposed to. And they accept that their life is just going to be the way it is.

What Matt has shown me so clearly is that our words never define or create our lives. It is only our energy that allows us an opportunity for creative life design.

The Magnifying Glass

I believe these unique humans are here to put a magnifying glass over how our energy affects the things around us.

If surrounded by stress, chaos, depression, or anger, those same emotions will be remembered and played back. However, if allowed creative exploration and surrounded by positive thoughts, love, and a general feeling of carefreeness, that becomes the basis of their own energetic output.

When we approach life with zest and a carefree nature that everything is perfect in whatever way it unfolds, we start to see synchronicity mirror our dominant energy back to us in the form of lucky coincidences and miracles.

Everything around us is a brilliant reminder of what our dominant thoughts and beliefs are pointing at and manifesting. When something pops up that we are displeased with, we can use it as a routine oil check to make sure all of our mental and energetic cylinders are firing appropriately.

As Matt is apt to say: Made to eat, not to waste.

Indeed, life is delicious. Let’s not waste a moment.

This is the lens the Bible is meant to be read through.
