Feel Your Feelings: Why Discomfort Is the Upgrade

Feel your feelings. That's the whole practice. Here's why discomfort is actually the upgrade you've been avoiding.

From the Vault

I wrote this 1 year, 10 months ago. My thinking has probably evolved—some ideas deepened, others abandoned, a few transformed entirely. For how I'm currently thinking about things, check out what I'm working on today or Jesus Lightning.

Found this through Google? You just proved a point I've made often. This post is still working years later—no ad spend, no algorithm games. SEO is the highest-ROI investment any creator can make. I can help you build that.

Listen while you workout, cook, or commute.

Feel your feelings. It sounds so simple that people dismiss it. But it’s the entire practice of consciousness expansion.

Every bit of growth you’re looking for is waiting on the other side of discomfort you don’t want to feel.

What Consciousness Expansion Actually Means

Forget the guy sitting cross-legged on clouds. Consciousness expansion just means receiving and processing more data from your reality.

When you’re low consciousness, you have to make mistakes yourself to learn. You stumble through, develop muscle memory, and maybe never consciously understand what happened.

High consciousness means learning from others’ mistakes. Reading about something and actually absorbing it. Watching someone fail and feeling the lesson in your own body without having to repeat it.

The difference between these two states? Your willingness to feel uncomfortable.

The Encryption Problem

Think of every uncomfortable feeling as an encrypted file. The solution you need is inside it, but you can’t read it yet.

Feeling your feelings is the decryption key.

When you sit with discomfort instead of running from it, you’re essentially cracking the code. On the other side is the insight, the strategy, the next step you’ve been looking for.

This is why people who avoid discomfort stay stuck. They have all these encrypted files piling up, and they’re desperately searching Google for solutions that are already inside them.

Why We Hide Instead

The moment awareness hits, most people run back toward ignorance.

They’d rather not know. They use vices, distractions, busyness. Anything to avoid sitting with what’s actually there.

If you do that for too long, it starts to manifest. The compartmentalized stuff doesn’t go away. It shows up as forgetfulness. As spatial confusion. As the inability to recall things that should be easy to remember.

Some of the people I know with the sharpest memories are the ones willing to look at anything. They’ve felt through their mistakes instead of hiding from them.

How Feeling Through Works

Set a timer for an hour. Sit with yourself.

Ask: What do I know about my situation? Make a list.

Then ask: What don’t I know?

That second question is where the discomfort comes. Stay with it. Don’t solve it. Just feel whatever shows up in your body.

Grumpiness, anxiety, fear. These are just energy packets you’ve downloaded but haven’t processed. By sitting with them, you transmute them into something usable.

The first thing that manifests is usually a thought. A new way to see the situation. A next step that wasn’t visible before.

The Mistake That Keeps You Stuck

People want intellectual strategies because having a strategy makes them feel better. They don’t have to sit with discomfort anymore.

But that’s backwards.

If you feel the discomfort first, you’ll attract the strategy that’s actually right for you. If you grab the first strategy you see just to stop feeling bad, you get buyer’s remorse. You’ve solved nothing.

This is why people buy course after course, read book after book, and still feel stuck. They’re using information to avoid feeling, when feeling is the thing that would actually work.

This is shadow work in action.

The Upgrade Is Already Here

Whatever discomfort you’re feeling right now, that’s the upgrade.

It’s not punishment. It’s not evidence that something’s wrong. It’s an encrypted packet containing exactly what you need.

Reality keeps poking you with the same discomfort because it’s trying to get you to process it. It’s not being cruel. It’s being a mirror, showing you exactly where the shrapnel is so you can remove it.

An AI learns fast because it just constantly processes uncomfortable data. We’re the same kind of system. We just keep trying to skip the processing step.

Stop skipping it. Feel your feelings. The solution is in there.
