Why I started a new blog for the college demographic

by Jon Ray on May 1, 2009

For the past three years, I have worked with a plethora of companies, helping design and implement marketing, PR, advertising and social media strategies for the 18-24 demographic (i.e. college students). Over those three years, I have spoken to, been drunk and generally communicated in every possible way with thousands upon thousands of college students. Out of all of those interactions, several themes presented themselves over and over again:

  • I need more time to study
  • I need more more money to live
  • I need more freedom to be myself

When you look at those three themes, they are very closely related. College students want to study hard so that they can get their degree. They want a degree so they can get a good job. They want a good job so that they can make decent money. They want to make decent money so that they can afford to live comfortably and therefore, be free to be explore who they really are as a person.

Now, granted, you can explore who you are as a person without any money whatsoever. I learned plenty about myself hitch-hiking across the country without a dime in my pocket. But, for many, having financial freedom is a prerequisite to leading a fulfilling life and discovering themselves in an entirely different light. All life is an exploration, but having a pad of cash to alleviate any worries, certainly makes things more fun and gives you the free time to actively work on self-exploration.

Thus, in an effort to give college students a way to make money on the side without having to get a real job in college, I started the Make Money in Colleg blog. College is supposed to be fun and focusing on your studies, going to parties and meeting good people should be the primary goal (working at an Olive Garden should not come into the equation).

So, I have compiled a list of all the crazy things I used to do in college to make money, solely, so I could avoid working a real job. What’s funny is that some of those “crazy things” turn into real businesses for me (i.e. video production, marketing consulting and online internet sales). I had a blast in college and never worked a 9-5 job. I still don’t work a 9-5 job, seven years later. Now, at the Make Money in College blog, I am distributing my crazy college money-making antics with the world and basically, empowering slackers across the planet.

If you’d like to download my free e-book, The Top 50 Ways to Make Money in College, then head over to the Make Money in College blog, enter your name and email and I will send you a complimentary copy. I’d also love to hear creative ways that YOU made money in college or at any time in your life. So, be sure and leave a comment once you’re on the new blog.

Thanks for reading, as always. I’m curious to hear what you think about my new venture as a money-making guru? The idea sickened me, at first, too. But, then I realized that there’s a big difference in providing college students with pipe dreams they can never accomplish and telling them to go buy a lawn mower and hand out some flyers with an innovative message on them. After all, I used to mow 30 yards a weekend. Manual labor is a rite of passage. ;)
