If you haven’t heard, Natalie Dylan (a pseudonym) is actioning off her virginity to the highest bidder (current bid $3.8 million!). I was quoted in the CNN article, ‘What is virginity worth today?‘ saying,
In a world that is teeming with brand messages, with sponsorships everywhere, intimacy is really just the next thing to go.
This has, obviously, thrown up a few moral/religious concerns for many people. Is what Natalie Dylan is doing prostitution? She admits it is and goes further saying, “Honestly, even if I didn’t do this, I’d always be the girl who thinks prostitution is OK.” So, what do you think? Is this prostitution? If so, is that such a bad thing? After all, she’s doing it in Nevada, where prostitution is legal and 3.8 million dollars will buy a LOT of schooling, which is what 22-year old, Natalie initially started the auction to pay for according to Telegraph.co.uk.
Natalie does not plan on pursuing a career in prostitution, it’s a one time deal. So, other than the fact that she is a virgin (she’s willing to be medically tested to prove this fact) is this really that different from a girl going home with some random guy because she’s lonely and he bought her a few drinks? Would you feel differently about this whole scenario if Natalie were at a bar and working for drink commissions, then decided to go home with a guy because he bought her four deliciously alcoholic drinks…at a million dollars a drink?
If you were/are still a virgin, how would the Natalie Dylan story effect you? If you are a parent with a daughter, what do you say to your kid when this story flashes across the television? Is sex even that big a deal anymore? What would you do with $3.8 million dollars?
