It’s amazing how powerful our sense of smell can be. There are certain things that I can catch the slightest whiff of in the air and all of the sudden I am right back in the place where I first smelled it. This is a list of smells that to this day, still make me nostalgic:
- Smell – Makes me nostalgic for
- Bed Head Hair Wax – Sneaking out of my parent’s house to have sex in high school
- Bacardi Rum – Riding the bus in Cancun
- Tea Rose Perfume – The car ride to church on Sunday mornings when I was a kid
- Winterfresh Chewing Gum – Driving up and down Cedar Ridge Drive with a lip full of Skoal Wintergreen Long Cut Chewing Tobacco (why did I ever do this?)
- Camp Fire – Drinking Keystone Light at 4am by the water at Joe Pool Lake and thinking I was invincible
- Dry sweat – 2-a-day football practices in 100-degree heat and the satisfaction of a coach saying, “you were one of the best out there today.”
- Cold Salt-Water Air – Sleeping on the beach after hitch-hiking to South Padre Island with no money and just going with the flow
- Irish Coffee – Skiing with some of the most genuine people I’ve ever met and knowing they would never judge me
Our sense of smell is a powerful thing. What smells bring up distant memories for you? Leave your favorites as a comment.
