On Nostalgic Smells

It’s amazing how powerful our sense of smell can be. There are certain things that I can catch the slightest whiff of in the air and all of the sudden I am right back in the place where I first smelled it. This is a list of smells that to this day, still make me nostalgic:

  • Smell – Makes me nostalgic for
  • Bed Head Hair Wax – Sneaking out of my parent’s house to have sex in high school
  • Bacardi Rum – Riding the bus in Cancun
  • Tea Rose Perfume – The car ride to church on Sunday mornings when I was a kid
  • Winterfresh Chewing Gum – Driving up and down Cedar Ridge Drive with a lip full of Skoal Wintergreen Long Cut Chewing Tobacco (why did I ever do this?)
  • Camp Fire – Drinking Keystone Light at 4am by the water at Joe Pool Lake and thinking I was invincible
  • Dry sweat – 2-a-day football practices in 100-degree heat and the satisfaction of a coach saying, “you were one of the best out there today.”
  • Cold Salt-Water Air – Sleeping on the beach after hitch-hiking to South Padre Island with no money and just going with the flow
  • Irish Coffee – Skiing with some of the most genuine people I’ve ever met and knowing they would never judge me

Our sense of smell is a powerful thing. What smells bring up distant memories for you? Leave your favorites as a comment.

I actually have many smell-memory type things, but I’ll spare you.

1) Candy Apple Body Spray – I sprayed that stuff on everything when I attended HPU.. so, it kinda smells like happiness.
2) That smell of burning woodchips when it’s freezing outside – It smells like that every night of winter in my hometown.

Ahh. =)

fresh cut sweet grass–the first smell i remember when i visited family in the dutch countryside 10 years ago.
tequila–my first romp with jose cuervo when i was 16…the smell still haunts me all these years later.
victoria’s secret very sexy for him2 cologne–for 3 years it reminded me of an old boyfriend, then i bought it for my now ex so i’d have happier thoughts when i thought about it. it still makes me melt.
