YouTube to offer HD video?

by Jon Ray on August 12, 2008

YouTube has been talking about improving its video quality for some time now, but it appears they might be moving in the direction of offering higher quality encoding for certain clips already.

According to VideoHelp.com by adding &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 to the end of a YouTube video link you will view a H.264 encoded clip at 480×360 resolution with a bitrate up to 850K.

What does that mean?

Here is a music video we shot for artist Chako and another for SonyBMG and Sounds Under Radio. The first link on each is the regular YouTube version. The second link is the new enhanced quality video. You be the judge.

Chako - Cuando Te Vi Con El - Music Video

Sounds Under Radio - Sell Out - Music Video

Will YouTube soon offer even higher quality video and allow HD uploads? Speaking at the NewTeeVee conference last November, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen confirmed that YouTube was testing HD video, reported CNet and TechCrunch, but where is it? Perhaps this is a step in the right direction?

Just trying out some new types of writing to those who read this far. Apparently, I’m a writer now, so that means I have to find a voice, supposedly. Feel free to tell me exactly how you felt about this style, story, content, etc. Hurt my feelings if you want, I just need the feedback or the people who pay me money will beat me with a bone whip.
