A scary path, but one you;ll never look back from, that I can promise, I was there myself 3 years ago. Since then I've quit my job, done a fair share of loafing about as a student, set up my own design agency (partnership) and allowed myself to think more about what I'm doing. I'm not saying it's ideal, it's certainly not always easy, but hell, it is more fun, and surely that's what counts.
