Just trying out some new types of writing to those who read this far. Apparently, I’m a writer now, so that means I have to find a voice, supposedly. Feel free to tell me exactly how you felt about this style, story, content, etc. Hurt my feelings if you want, I just need the feedback or the people who pay me money will beat me with a bone whip. A personal brand is all about being consistent. I know many people who try to put on a “public face” and then treat their co-workers like crap. It never works, you must be true to your brand.
This does not mean that people are perfect, and make mistakes. We are all human, and no matter what your “brand” sometimes you will stumble. The trick is to make those slip ups the rare exception, not the rule. People are very forgiving when they know the real you. That is why it is important to be transparent.
Look at the movie the Wizard of OZ. As long as the wizard was hiding behind the curtain he was a mystery, but once he allowed everyone to see the real him he was much happier, as were the people of Oz. Do not hide behind a curtain… let your true self shine through and you will prosper.
Of course if you are a jerk, then this whole concept wont work for you. Thus, my advice is that people need to get over themselves and just not be jerks. Jerks always get discovered.
Keep up the good work in 2008, Jon. I expect big things from you!

I agree with thom; consistency is key. With every social network I use (twitter, my blog, LinkedIn) I make it a point to make sure that my brand name is displayed, but not without a reference to me (a picture, my name, or my Mii face [sort of an unofficial trademark]) nearby.
Twitter has done wonders for helping me build a personal brand. It allows me to post blog updates, and keeps people personally involved in my life. That way, when someone thinks “I need a graphic designer” or “I wonder if I could do this with my wordpress blog” then they think of me first. Personal marketing, moreso than regular marketing, is how things should (and will) be done in the coming years.
Great question, and keep up the great work!
I have “standardized” my online identity by consistently using the brand “DrThomasHo”
For example, my “online identity” is now at:
http://DrThomasHo.info
and I expect that I will soon point:
http://DrThomasHo.com
there as well.
Since I am especially “bullish” on mobility, I have also created:
http://DrThomasHo.mobi (I also own http://ThomasHo.mobi)
as my “mobile-friendly” personal site.
